The Music Map to new music

I've always been looking for a website that basically introduces me to new music without having to just search for something specifically. Granted this is probably more of me being stubborn and trying to find something to define myself but the Music Map is basiclly a simple program with great potential. It works on associating and linking visitors interests with music, almost creating a floating web of suggestions of musical tastes from one single band name.

Part of the GNOD (Global Network of Dreams), you can just type in a name, and poof...a plethora of suggestions, similar bands or musical tastes comes up. This isn't too accurate seeing how the system doesn't limit itself to genres and therefore you have no way in knowing what you are about to listen to aside from a general idea. I'm sure that country will be country, but eventually it would lead to something like Kid Rock. The other flaw is that mainstream bands do make up 80%-90% of any single band web, however it's amazing enough that up to 20% of different unknown bands make it through.

  • I'm partial to audioscrobbler for new musical recommendations myself, but it takes them a while to compile a database of music that you've listened to before they pop out recommendations.

That said, this is great if you want quick and dirty recommendations.

  • you guys do it the hard way. I go to Amazon.com, type in a band I like and they have these lists that say "customers who enjoyed this, also enjoyed this" and then list a bunch of like-minded music. many of them end up branching out in new directions.
